MSgt Williams was presented the Congressional Medal of Honor (MOH) for outstanding acts of gallantry and heroism, while serving in Afghanistan on April 6th, 2008. He went above the call of duty to save many lives, while putting himself in harms way. MSgt Williams grew up in the small town of Boerne, Texas. During the ceremony President Trump read the citation of award to those in attendance before presenting MSgt Williams the MOH.

Back in the day – 1985, to be exact. I joined the Army and became a young, enthusiastic paratrooper who was totally convinced of not only my own superiority, but also my invulnerability. Aren’t all 20-something paratroopers going to live forever? I very much enjoyed my time in the Army, and nearly three years in what was at the time West Germany. A few years later, I had planned to reenlist, but the thought of not being with my aging parents brought me back home and into the WV National Guard near the end of the 1980s.

Office of the Press Secretary, FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, October 10, 2019President Donald J. Trump to Award the Medal of Honor On October 30, 2019, President Donald J. Trump will award the Medal of Honor to Master Sergeant Matthew O. Williams, United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry while serving as a Weapons Sergeant in Support of Operation Enduring Freedom.  On April 6, 2008, while serving as a member of a Special Forces Operational Detachment Alpha 3336, Special Operations Task Force-33, assault element, then-Sergeant Williams exposed himself to insurgent fire multiple times while rescuing other members of the assault element and evacuating numerous casualties. In the face of rocket-propelled grenade, sniper, and machine gun fire, Sergeant Williams led an Afghan Commando element across a fast-moving, ice cold, and waist-deep river to fight its way up a terraced mountain to the besieged lead element of the assault force. Sergeant Williams then set up a base of fire that the enemy was not able to overcome.

On June 25, 2019, the President of the United States, President Donald Trump, presented the Congressional Medal of Honor to Staff Sargent David Bellavia (United States Army). SSgt Bellavia became the first living recipient from OIF to receive this honor. This distinguished honor is the highest honor given to anyone serving in the U.S. military for actions that go above and beyond their call of duty.
